This resource outlines each step to provide the sought-after information. Follow the instructions below for streamlined access to records of marriages that occurred in Wyoming.

Are Marriage Records & Licenses Open to the Public in Wyoming?

Those intending to look up marriages that took place fifty years ago or longer are in luck as the information is available to the public. Even so, searchers should be aware that despite its Public Records Act, Wyoming is a closed state, meaning, vital records, such as marriage records are not publicly available.

Fortunately, this information can be obtained from third party sites, as these sites check online sources such as social media content to obtain information about recent marriages in Wyoming.

In Wyoming, marriage records can be requested at both the state and county levels. Further, there are 23 counties in Wyoming, and their websites provide information on how to conduct a search of their records.

On the other hand, at the state level, these marriage records can be obtained from the Department of Health’s Vital Statistics Services.1

In addition to providing marriage records at the state level, the Vital Statistics Services provides insight on the rate of marriages within the state.

The data shows that although the rate of marriage within the state has stayed mostly consistent, there was a slight dip between 2015 and 2020, with 2020 experiencing the lowest number of marriages. More recently, in 2021, 7.4 out of 1,000 people were married.

How To Look Up Wyoming Marriage Records & Licenses

Inquirers seeking to find marital records for marriages that happened in the last 50 years can complete a form to obtain official marriage records from the Wyoming Department of Health Vital Statistics Services.

This form needs to be completed because as of present, the state of Wyoming does not provide a means for searchers to access marriage records online.

Unfortunately for those attempting to look up whether someone is married, as stated on the marriage request form, only the bride and groom are entitled to receive this vital record.

This image features the "Request for Certified Copy of a Wyoming Vital Record" form from the Wyoming Department of Health's Vital Statistics Services, specifying required personal details for ordering birth certificates and paternity acknowledgment affidavits, with a note on procedures for requesting excessive copies of these records.

The wife or husband listed in the marriage certificate can obtain the certified marriage certificate by paying $25 for a regular copy, or $30 for a photocopy. The acceptable means of payment are a personal check or money order that lists the Vital Statistics Services as the recipient of the funds.

If unsure, call 307.777.7591 to verify the current fees; this will help inquirers avoid delays that may result from rendering the wrong payment sum.

Moreover, searchers should beware that the state requires a showing of identity before releasing marriage records. Necessary documentation is a photocopy of the requesting party’s unexpired state issued identification card or passport containing the applicant’s signature.

Sourcing Marriage Records at the County Level in Wyoming

While conducting a search for marriage records at the state level allows for a wider range of results, those who are unsuccessful in obtaining results through this means can seek out information at the county level.

Although Sweetwater County does not have as much information regarding public marriage records on its website or an index through which interested parties can search, the County’s website does state that at a nominal fee of $1, someone can obtain an unofficial copy of a marriage certificate.4

However, there are more restrictions to obtaining a certified copy of the marriage certificate as this information can only be accessed from the Vital Statistics Services Office within Wyoming. Additionally, records for marriages that occurred over 50 years ago can be retrieved by contacting the County Clerk to determine the best means for access.

In Fremont County Wyoming, certified marriage records can only be obtained through the Department of Health.

However, applicants who received their marriage license from the Fremont County Clerk’s office can retrieve those records if they complete a certified marriage license request form. The form must be printed and mailed to the county clerk’s office with a $5 payment enclosed, and callers can also call the county clerk’s office (307.332.2405) to pay the $5 using a credit card.

When conducting this search to find out if someone is married, inquirers should input the first and last name of the parties to the marriage (prior to the matrimony).

Additionally, an address should be provided for where the certified copy of the marriage license should be sent.

Note: Searchers should be aware that if they are not the parties to the marriage, they must include their name, address, and why they are requesting the records, or else, their request will not be fulfilled.

How To Track Family Marriage Records Through Archive Indexes in Wyoming

Those who have strong roots in Wyoming can find out more about their family genealogy by conducting a search of family marriage records.

The Wyoming State Archives permits searchers to obtain archaic records such as original marriage licenses and applications,5 as well as affidavits that support the marriage application. These records span periods from 1989 to as far back as the 19th century.

The document itself will tell the inquirers where the record of the nuptial can be obtained.

For example, they will state the county that holds the records and direct them to the physical storage location of the documents. Subsequently, the documents can only be obtained by going to the location where they have been stored.

Knowing the approximate year, and more important, the day the ancestors got married will be especially useful when searching the marriage records held by the state archives. Moreover, the archivist is available to help those who need help finding records.

Further, there are fees associated with obtaining copies of the state archive records for personal uses and commercial uses.6 Requesters can also obtain records from old newspaper and family lineage sources.

Laramie County, one of the most populous counties within the state, maintains an index of marriages that occurred before 1985.

Inquirers can search the index and after identifying the appropriate record, a request can be made, at a cost of $5, to obtain certified marriage records from the county clerk’s office. Searchers should be aware, however, that access to this index may be denied.

If a searcher is unable to access the marriage records index online, they should contact the Laramie County Clerk’s Office by calling 307.633.4264. The inquiry can also be made via email at office@laramiecountywy.gov.

For records of marriages that took place in the last 50 years, the county directs searchers to the state’s Vital Statistics Services page.

The Campbell County also maintains marriage indices ranging from 1904-1928, 1988-1990, 1991-2000, 2001-2010, and 2011-2014. This index is listed based on the order of the woman’s maiden name so if a searcher would like to conduct a marriage background check before walking down the aisle, knowing the woman’s last name would be helpful.

Searchers should note, however, that this information is gathered through news records and that there are no hyperlinks to copies of the actual marriage records.

Upon locating the subjects to the search, inquirers can contact the county to request a copy of the actual news report from which the data was gathered. This request can be made by phone call, 307.687.0115 or by submitting an online record request form.

Family marriage records can also be obtained from the National Archives.9

Moreover, because the website contains a breadth of information that can make it intimidating for searchers to initiate their search, there is an FAQ section of the website that answers a host of common questions.10

Further, while searchers can find information about their family history through the documents in this national repository, information such as family trees will not be available using this resource. Yet, census records are available from 1790 to 1950.

Copies of records found within this national repository can be obtained online for a fee, and there is also a general fee schedule available for all copies of records ordered.11

In addition to finding statewide marriage records online through the National Archives’ electronic database,12 it may also be beneficial for searchers to visit the facility in person. There is a web page dedicated to instructing users on whether to visit in person. The department informs searchers that they should communicate with the archives team before visiting in person.

How To Submit a Marriage License Application in WY

In Wyoming, marriage license applications are filed with the county from which a party is interested in obtaining the license. Generally, in order to submit the application, the applicant must establish that he or she is 18 years or older.

Applicants as young as 16 and 17 years old can obtain a marriage license if their parents or guardians approve. For example, in Teton County, applicants can obtain the records if they complete the requisite questionnaire and provide their photo identification, and a fee of $30 to the local County Clerk’s Office.

Most of these requirements for obtaining a marriage license are highlighted in the Wyoming State Statute and are applicable throughout the different counties within the state.

Additionally, general information that applicants should be prepared to share includes: their full name, the state in which they were born, social security number, phone numbers, birth date, age, gender, current address for both parties, and notification of whether the marriage in question would be the first marriage.

The requesters of these marriage records should also be prepared to state their marital status at the time of the application, information regarding divorce if applicable (date and location of divorce), and widows need to state the date of their spouse’s death.

Applicants should be prepared to provide information about their ethnicity, race, the level of education they hold, parents’ legal name, and information regarding where the parties’ parents were born.
