Inmates are people who are incarcerated in either a jail or prison, and records on them can offer details on offenses, charges, sentencing, correctional facility location, and more. This streamlined resource covers the best ways to access records on anyone incarcerated throughout the state at no cost.

Being Incarcerated in a Jail vs Prison

Inmates may be held in jail or prison, depending on the crime they’ve committed and the sentence they’re given. Jails are county or municipal facilities run by the county sheriff’s office or local police department.

Often, they hold people awaiting trial, those who commit less serious crimes and individuals due for transfer to another facility to serve a longer sentence. People typically remain in county or city jails for up to a year while waiting for their trial or for bail to be posted on their behalf.

In contrast, prisons are run by the Wyoming Department of Corrections (WDOC) or the Federal Bureau of Prisons, with inmates who commit state crimes being held in WDOC facilities and those convicted of federal crimes being held in federal prisons. The individuals incarcerated in prisons have committed more serious felonies and received a sentence of longer than one year. As such, the prisons are equipped to handle prolonged stays.

The WDOC runs five prisons within the state with varying levels of security:1

  • The Honor Conservation Camp & Wyoming Boot Camp in Newcastle hold all levels of female inmates and minimum security males and aim to reduce re-offending through cognitive and behavioral intervention.2
  • Male prisoners considered low-risk are housed in the minimum custody of Honor Farm prison in Riverton.
  • Wyoming Medium Correctional Institution acts as an intake, assessment, education and treatment center for male inmates requiring high levels of mental health or medical treatment.3
  • The Wyoming State Penitentiary in Rawlins is the state’s high-custody prison for male offenders.
  • Located in Lusk, the Wyoming Women’s Center is the main state facility and treatment center for female inmates.4

The majority of people incarcerated in Wyoming are in jail. As prisons are reserved for those who commit state or federal-level crimes, such inmates are less common.

The process for conducting an inmate search in Wyoming is slightly different for jails and prisons, as the authorities overseeing them differ.

How To Find Inmates in a Wyoming Jail

There are 23 local jails in Wyoming that are spread across the state’s 23 counties. As of 2021, there were 1,397 inmates incarcerated in the state’s jails.5

To find inmates in a given county jail, use that jail’s website. For example, Uinta County Detention Center offers a link to an Active Inmate Roster on its website.6

The roster is supplied as a PDF document, which should open without difficulty on most devices. The file is quite large and includes a list of the names, statuses and booking dates of each inmate, along with a photograph.

The inmate roster is supplied in alphabetical order. Users can search the file by pressing CTRL+F or selecting “Find” from the dropdown menu of their PDF reader.

The low prison population in Wyoming means most county jails use a similar system. For example, the Lincoln County Jail provides an inmate roster as a scrollable list on its website.7 These shortlists make it easy to perform an inmate search in Wyoming.

Individuals who are arrested by city police in Wyoming are typically taken to the nearest county jail for booking rather than held by the police.

How To Conduct a Wyoming Inmate Search (Statewide Lookup)

The Wyoming Department of Corrections (WDOC) provides an Offender Locator Tool.8 This tool can be searched using:

  • WDOC Inmate Number
  • First Name
  • Last Name
  • Age
  • Gender

To perform a state inmate search, the form requires either an inmate number or the first two letters of the inmate’s last name. Where the inmate number is known, this overrides other details in the search.

The results will be displayed as a table that includes the offender’s first name, last name, gender and status. Clicking on a result in the table will provide additional details, such as which correctional facility the inmate is in and other details, including:

  • Sentence Date
  • Length of Sentence
  • Offense
  • Eye Color
  • Hair Color
  • Height
  • Weight
  • Ethnicity
  • Projected Discharge Date
  • Parole Eligibility Date

The Wyoming Department of Corrections operates five facilities across the state, of which four are for males and one is for females. Some information about the facilities is provided below:

The VINELink service is particularly useful for victims of crime who would like to be kept informed of the whereabouts of offenders. VINELink is free for people to register and will automatically send messages to a subscriber when an inmate they’re interested in is released, transferred or escapes.

The service can notify victims so they have the opportunity to take part in an offender’s parole hearing. It also gives them the opportunity to mentally prepare themselves if they were traumatized by a crime and the offender is due to be released back into the community.

How To Execute a Federal Prisoner Lookup

Use the Find an Inmate form on the Bureau of Prisons’ website to perform an inmate search for federal prisoners. This form offers the option to search by first name, middle name, last name, race, age and sex. It also offers the option to search by a range of offender numbers, such as an inmate’s FBI number or their DC Department of Corrections (DCDC) inmate ID number.

It’s useful to enter as many details as are available. This tool includes information about federal prisoners dating back several decades, and the results page is limited to just 100 records. If the inmate has a common name, simply searching by first name and surname may not immediately produce the desired result.

The Bureau of Prisons (BOP) records include federal inmates who were incarcerated from 1982 through to the present day.9 To find information about inmates who were jailed before that time, consider looking at the National Archives Prison Records, which includes digitized records for some penitentiaries dating back to the 19th century.10

Another useful tool is PACER, which is an electronic court records search tool that includes both historic court records and records from recent cases. There is a nominal fee to access PACER, and it’s charged per page of information. Users are also required to register for an account to access the system, but no specific qualifications are required for someone to be permitted to create an account.

PACER may be useful for recent court cases if the limited filtering options Bureau of Prisons website make it difficult to track down someone with a common name.

The tools listed above are useful for those looking to perform a Wyoming inmate search and should be used responsibly for personal information only.
